I was really proud of my showings. I was really nervous because summer ended and I was just starting to do run-throughs and the Grand Prix was around the corner. I was really scattered and unprepared when usually I'm feeling good at that time of the season. So, I was really pleased with the programs I put out.
Instead of a post-Olympic lull, it seems like the level of competition on the men's side got even better...
Definitely. I think that this year people really feel like they have nothing to lose and they're throwing it all out there and it's really raised the bar in a lot of ways. It's been really exciting and fun to watch and I'm happy to be in the midst of all that.
How disappointing was it to watch the last Grand Prix in France and realize you would not qualify for a third-straight Final?
It was a little upsetting because I do feel like I belong there and I won it two years ago.
It was frustrating because it was one of my goals, but at the same time it was a good thing for me because I was having so many boot issues it gave me opportunity to solve all that. I'm in a new pair of skates and at the moment everything is going well.
Now you're preparing to go for a third-straight U.S. title. Do you think it will be any easier to defend for a second time?
I don't think it ever gets easier because everyone else gets better. With Johnny [Weir] and Evan [Lysacek] not competing this season I really feel like I am the frontrunner.
Last season I was coming in as the previous champion, but my focus was to make the [Olympic] Team. I didn't care where I came as long as I was on the Olympic Team. Skating the way I did and winning the title was just a huge cherry on top of a whole amazing experience.
This year I absolutely want to defend my title and I'm focusing on that a little more than I was last season. That will probably make it different, but I feel confident going into Nationals this year because I really do feel like I am the leading man in the U.S.
